The Third IEEE Workshop on Wireless LANs: Web Based Proceedings

PANELS

Enabling Technologies for Next Generation WLAN,WPAN, WHAN: What Will Win?
Chair: Geoff Dawe, President/CEO Global Communication Devices
Panelists: James Moniz, Conexant -- Dr. Ken O, University of Florida -- Drayt Avera, RF Solutions

Summary: The main question posed to the panel of experts on semiconductor technologies was: “What is the 5 year Technology Roadmap for the WLAN/WPAN/WHAN Industry?”  Each panelist introduced themselves and made a short (5 min) position statement.  The moderated tried to summarize, embellish and strengthen each position in order to generate controversy amongst the panel.  Viewpoints of CMOS, SiGe, BiCMOS and GaAs were presented.  Audience participation was welcomed and fairly abundant.   The WLAN market was compared to the cellular market in many cases.  Several good points were made but the only clear winner was the audience themselves.  It was an entertaining and colorful session.

Limited-Range Wireless Communications: The Challenges Evolve
Chair: Craig J. Mathias, Principal Farpoint Group
Panelists: Wayne Caswell, HomeRF Communications Chairman, SIEMENS Cordless Products -- Rick Maule, Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Connectivity Division, 3Com Business Connectivity Company --  Jim Zyren, Director of Marketing, Wireless Networking Business Unit, Intersil --  Rick Bahr, Vice President, Engineering, Atheros
Summary:

"Show and Tell" of Emerging Home Network Boxes
Chair: Marie-José Montpetit, Ph.D., Network Architect Nokia Home Communications
Panelists: David Starobinski, Professor Boston University -- Kevin P. Jones, Vice President Nokia Home Communications Boston -- Carlton Sparrel, Network Architect, Ucentric

Summary:  The "show and tell" panel of emerging boxes using wireless technologies brought together 2 local companies, Nokia Home Communication and Ucentric, as well as the Wireless Lab at Boston University. Nokia was represented by Kevin Jones, sales director for North America.  Ucentric was represented by Carlton Sparrel, Network Architect, and Dr David Starobinski represented BU. All panelists were in agreement that wireless technologies would be a enabler for home networks. Approaches were slightly different with Ucentric (in essence a software platform) proposing an integrated gateway/entertainment solution and Nokia favoring a more distributed approach with multiple boxes geared to specific solution. BU presented their approach to data synchronization amongst multiple hosts. The actual demonstration included data sync on handheld devices (BU), video streaming from a wireless home gateway (802.11b from Nokia) and home entertainment and control platform (Ucentric). Attendance was high. Questions centered on use and availability of the technologies. Overall a great success for the conference.
