The Third IEEE Workshop on Wireless LANs: Greetings

It is my pleasure to welcome you to this third gathering of the IEEE Workshop on Wireless LANs.  This is a prestigious and historical workshop in wireless broadband access and ad-hoc networking that is organized every five years.  In keeping with tradition of the workshop the technical program is tailored to the current state of the wireless LAN industry. The theme of this third workshop is the new trend of location-aware local networks for wireless LAN-PAN-HANs, coupled with business development in this industry.

This year,  the Third IEEE Workshop on Wireless LAN is held in Newton-Boston for the first time.  The Boston area's numerous renowned universities, pioneering IT industry, historic landmarks and charming neighborhoods make it an excellent choice for the venue of the workshop.  The workshop is also timed to take place a few days before IEEE PIMRC 2001 in San Diego, to facilitate participation from overseas.

The technical program of the Third Workshop encompasses two days.  The first day begins with a keynote speech by Edson D. de Castro, founder of Data General, to demonstrate the emphasis on business development in the emerging wireless LAN industry.  Three executive panels of invited speakers address chip development, market development, and product demonstrations.  Ten technical sessions address important emerging technologies such as UWB, indoor geolocation, and OFDM; examine technical issues related to Bluetooth, IEEE 802.11 and HIPERLAN standards, and discuss performance monitoring and user perspectives.

To encourage young researchers, the workshop will award prizes for selected papers written and presented by students.

We are sure that our strong technical program and the charm and attraction of historic Boston will create an enjoyable experience for all participants in the workshop.
