The Digital RoamAbout network adapter is what gives most of the CWINS laptops their wireless network capabilities. The network card fits into the laptop's PCMCIA slot while the radio attaches to the back of the laptop. The radio uses a spread spectrum signal in the 915 MHz ISM band to generate data rates up to 2 Mbps. Laptops can communicate peer to peer or to the backbone via a wireless access point. This adapter was a forerunner to the 802.11 wireless LAN standard. The lab also has several 2.4 MHz RoamAbout cards for performance comparison. |
